STORY DETAILS:
Like the concept of Yin and Yang, the folkloric motif consisting of two opposing forces is timeless and enduring and is hidden in plain sight in this folktale which is about how creation and destruction are part of the whole, and how a sense of loss and feeling of rebirth and joy can coexist. . .Profound wisdom revealed in this ancient folktale about an enchanted relationship between a wise old woman and a creature with black feathers!
I created this piece in honor of the deep wisdom of indigenous North American folklore which arises from this precious landscape on which I live and depend, while at the same time honoring this enduring universal theme of life and death, Yin and Yang, that shows up in so many of our immigrant stories. This artwork honors both in efforts to reveal our deep connections so that we may continue to live harmoniously together seven generations from now.
GIFT SUGGESTIONS:
This would make a wonderful gift for an elder woman, a weaver, nature lover, gardener, or earth goddess or someone who must face the hard choice of saying "no" to one thing in order to say "yes" to what they truly want to birth in the world. It would especially be fitting for someone who appreciates the concept of Yin and Yang and/or the archetype of creation and destruction working in tandem together and someone who feels that this philosophy of life resonates with how they see and experience the world. It would also work well for pagans, someone who values indigenous wisdom, or someone who loves the mythic imagination and enjoys reading Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and books like Women Who Run with the Wolves.
