This handcrafted linocut honors the ancient folklore of mushrooms and fungi — the mystical fungi fairies, mushroom witches, forest spirits and otherworldly beings that have entered into our age-old stories of mushroom magic. Rising from decay and returning life to the earth, fungi have captivated human imagination for centuries, becoming symbols of mystery, the cycles of death, rebirth, and the hidden forces that shape the natural world. In Germany, fairy rings are called Hexenringe — “witches’ rings” — named for the enchanted circles that appear in the grass as if created by unseen forces. Mushrooms have carried names such as “witches’ butter,” “devil’s fingers,” and “Satan’s bolete,” reflecting the strange beauty and mystery that caused them to be both feared and revered. In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga is often visually depicted in forest clearings alongside mushrooms, and both she and her mushrooms, dwell in liminal spaces and are living symbols of death, decay, and renewal.

This design includes a variety of mushrooms including Fly Agaric, Fairy Inkcaps, Death Caps, Morels, Liberty Caps, and Bridal Veil Stinkhorns, crowned in moss and shadow. At its center stands the forest woman and mushroom forager: healer, witch, and wild heroine who carries the wisdom of the forest and who walks between the worlds of the seen and unseen.

COLORS: This has been printed using Caligo safewash non-toxic printmaking ink in two color options: witch green or periwinkle.

PAPER: It is printed in Strathmore printmaking paper (a paper mill local to my studio here in Massachusetts), and Hanji Paper, a handmade heritage paper made in Korea from natural materials. The Strathmore paper is bright white, smooth and modern looking while the HanJi is off-white, a little rustic-feeling and is very thin and almost translucent.

PACKAGING: This print will be carefully rolled in Kraft paper, packed in a recycled clear bag and shipped in a recycled cylindrical tube. A one-page insert including a description of the folktale is included with the print.
