Fungi Fairies and Mushroom Magic 12" x 18"
Fungi Fairies and Mushroom Magic 12" x 18"
This handcrafted linocut print celebrates the folklore surrounding mushrooms and their association with supernatural beings. Both fungi and fungi fairies are threshold beings of transformation, where decay and new life entwine. In German, fairy rings are called Hexenringe (“witches’ rings”), linked to the eerie dead grass circles they leave behind. Mushrooms were once named “witches’ butter,” “devil’s fingers,” and “Satan’s bolete,” revealing their magical associations. Elder women and healers were the original keepers of this fungal lore, bridging worlds above and below. In Russian folklore, mushrooms and Baba Yaga both dwell in liminal spaces of death, decay, and renewal. Here, I’ve depicted this folk heroine and forest witch surrounded by Fly Agaric, Fairy Inkcaps, Death Caps, Morels, Liberty Caps, Bridal Veil Stinkhorns, and mosses, inspired by the deep-rooted timeless magic of fungi!
